Traffic Management, Inc. Employee “Never Too Old to Learn”

How a Denver Traffic Controller gave himself a 60th birthday present by earning his GED.

Sometimes, all it takes is a little encouragement from your family to achieve a goal. Meet Traffic Management, Inc. (TMI)’s newest GED Program graduate – Curtis Williams from the TMI Denver branch.

“I wanted to show my kids that you’re never too old to go after something you want,” Curtis said. He says that in the end, it was his oldest son in college that motivated him to go back to school.“He really wanted it for me. Glad to make it happen.”

As for himself, Curtis says that high school was “rough.” He dropped out at age 16 to start working and never looked back. After years as a carpenter, a truck driver and at working at a meat packing plant, Curtis joined TMI as a Traffic Controller seeking one more position to round out his career. He later found out about the GED program offered via TMI University.

“The timing was perfect and I didn’t have to to figure out what to do to get started,” Curtis explained.

Not to say that the educational journey came easy. First was the Pandemic; then an upstairs apartment flooded and he and his family had to live in a hotel for two months – all while attempting to take the GED. “It was a whirlwind,” he said.

On his 60th birthday, Curtis passed his math test – the final assessment required to earn his GED.

“Anyone thinking about getting their GED should just do it,” Curtis shared. “Brenda, my advisor, was a great help. TMI’s program is really helpful and worth the effort.”

Curtis is not yet finished with his educational journey. “I signed up to become certified as an ATSSA Traffic Control Technician” At 60 years young, Curtis continues to learn.

Partnering with GEDWorks, TMI University GED Program offers online study material, practice tests, access to academic advisors and course materials in both Spanish and English. At no cost to participants, this finish-at-your-own-pace program is available for any TMI employees at any level who have been with the company for at least 90 days.

TMI wishes good luck to all participants. Are you a TMI Employee who is interested in applying for the program? Talk to your supervisor today or visit http://ged.com/tmi

TMI started with very humble beginnings in 1995 when the brothers were just teenagers in their great grandmother’s garage with only a handful of employees. Today over 25 years later, TMI now employs over 2,000 and is one of the largest organically grown traffic management companies in the United States.
